Using the Library

The Wiener Library is open to the general public. You are welcome to study our books, documents and photos in our reading room free of charge.

It is not necessary to make an appointment or become a member in order to study the materials available. However, if you are a first time user, please bring some photographic ID and either proof of address or a letter of introduction from your tutor or employer.

The Reading Room is open weekdays from 10.00am - 5.00pm. On Tuesdays the Reading Room is open from 10.00am - 7.30pm.

The majority of material in the Reading Room is available on open access. Readers are welcome to use as many of these books as they like and can leave them on the tables to be reshelved by the Library staff. Fragile material, duplicates and rare books are located on the top three shelves of the Reading Room and elsewhere in the Library. Readers can request this material using call slips.

If you would like further information please see our pages on Becoming a Member and Library Services.

Your Visit

We have recently moved to new premises in a historic location on Russell Square. Visitors with mobility impairments or conditions which preclude them from using the evacuation chairs in an emergency are advised to inform the Library prior to their visit. The Library will then provide access by these visitors to its materials in an accessible reading room at Birkbeck College.

Due to the sensitive nature of some of the themes of our institution, we recommend that our exhibition is not appropriate for children under 12.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
