Frequently Asked Questions

Can I adopt a book as a gift?

Yes. Adopting a book for someone makes a lovely gift for birthdays, anniversaries or religious festivals. Many people also choose to adopt a book as a lasting tribute to a loved one by dedicating a bookplate to them.

How long can my bookplate dedication be?

The size of the bookplate means that the maximum length is usually 10 words.

Does my donation pay for the conservation of my book?
No. Your gift goes into a special fund which is solely used to support the Wiener Library’s preservation work.

How will my donation help?
The following gives you an indication of how your gift may be used:

    £25  -  Will buy 12 large or 15 small acid-free archival folders
£100 -  Will pay for the digitisation of 75 pages of a fragile book, making it accessible to readers again
£250 -  Will buy a special compact, multi-functional vacuum cleaner for libraries and museums
£500 -  Will rent a machine for one week to transfer betacam videos to dvds

What is the difference between conservation and preservation?
Conservation is any treatment that keeps a book in as close to its original condition as possible for as long as possible.  Preservation goes beyond conservation of the original to include:
•  Control of environmental conditions
•  Ensuring the best possible storage
•  Providing a substitute e.g. a facsimile print or a digital copy for use by readers
