Hitler’s Helpers: The Female Administrators of the Holocaust
Dr Rachel Century (Holocaust Memorial Day Trust)
Fri 18 Oct 2013
SS-Helferinnen and Nachrichtenhelferinnen des Heeres were the female auxiliaries of the SS and the army, respectively. Both held similar jobs such as taking dictation, answering telephones, and sending telegrams. However, they were placed in different environments, different geographical locations, and were subsequently aware of varying degrees of Nazi persecution. In this lunchtime talk, Rachel Century will compare the women who specifically chose to serve the SS with those who took on such work for the Wehrmacht, and discuss what the different groups of women knew about the Holocaust.
Dr Rachel Century recently received her PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London, under the supervision of Professor David Cesarani. Rachel is now the Education Officer at the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.
