Lunchtime Screening: Lieder ohne Worte, Images of Memory
Fri 7 Feb 2014
Time: 1.00pm - 2.00pm
The English artist Barbara Loftus participated in a series of exhibitions and events in Berlin held to commemorate 80 years since the Nazi take-over of power in Germany. Loftus exhibited at the Ephraim Palais Stadtmuseum with an exhibition called 'Lieder ohne Worte, Images of Memory'. This is a cycle of paintings prompted by her mother Hildegard Barsch's unexpected disclosure in old age of memories previously kept hidden. These memories concerned the domestic life and destiny of Loftus's Jewish family in Berlin before and during the Holocaust. The exhibition in Berlin was accompanied by a 30 minute film made by the artist, which will be screened at this event.
In addition to the screening Barbara Loftus will be in conversation with Julia Winckler, a photographer, writer lecturer and specialist in archival and memory studies.
