Refurbishing 29 Russell Square

The Library has undertaken an extensive refurbishment of 29 Russell Square.  Here are some images of the building work that has taken place over the past year.

Entrance Hall

29 Russell Square is a Grade II listed townhouse with many original features.  The central staircase dominates the entrance hall, and had to be covered for protection during the construction works.

Archive Storage

The basement of the building has had climate-controlled storage installed for the Library's collections.

The Reading Room

Internal partitions on the first floor were removed to open up a larger, lighter Reading Room.

29 Russell Square

The new building is situated in the north-west corner of Russell Square.  The adjacent buildings are occupied by Birkbeck, University of London, including the newly formed Pears Institute for the Study of Antisemitism.

The Lift Shaft

A key element of the extensive refurbishment work was the installation of a lift to all floors.

The Mezzanine

A new mezzanine in the Reading Room allows us to vastly increase the number of books available for browsing.  This is a model of the proposed mezzanine.
